Woman remains in critical condition after early-morning Wichita apartment fire
WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) - The Wichita Fire Department says a woman critically injured in an early-morning fire on Thursday is still in very critical condition.
Crews responded just after 1 a.m. Thursday to the 2700 block of E. 9th Street for an apartment fire at the Liberty Way Apartments. WFD says upon arrival, smoke was showing and a second alarm was requested. Several residents had either self-evacuated and/or were assisted with evacuation.
The fire department says a 26-year-old woman was located by fire crews within an apartment and was removed. She was transported by EMS in critical condition to Ascension Via Christi burn unit for second-degree burns to 6% of her body as well as grade 4 smoke inhalation, which WFD says is the most severe.
She remains in very critical condition.
No other injuries were reported and it is unclear how the fire started.
