WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) - Burgers higher than you could imagine and specialty dessert pizzas are just some of the new concession items Intrust Bank Arena is offering to fans during this Wichita Thunder hockey season.

"We like to have fun. We're trying to be funky. We're trying to be seasonal. We try to be here for the guests," said Intrust Bank Arena's Executive Chef Salvador Hernandez.

As a life-long Thunder fan himself Hernandez says it's a dream getting to come up with food ideas to enhance the fan experience at the hockey games. He loves the energy in the crowd and he wants to combine that excitement with his passion for cooking to give fans an experience they'll never forget.

The team's beloved mascot inspired Hernandez to create the "Thunder Dog," with jalapeno relish, barbecue, pico, and more it takes the traditional hotdog to a whole new level.

"It's spicy, it's sweet, it brings the thunder and that's what the team does," he said. "Bring something extra. Something that no other arena is currently doing and the wow factor we're looking for in this culinary arts scene."

Other menu items include a specialty sweet and savory pizza as well as a burger that will rotate flavors each month, Thunder nachos, and two gourmet vegan items. Hernandez tells us it is important that this food be for everyone.

"We have a plant based patty and also we have a plant based meatball," he explained.

He says all food is made to order so it stays fresh.

In addition to adding special food options the arena is going green. It's replacing all plastic beer cups with recyclable metal ones. This is not only better for the earth but it's a souvenir you can take home with you to remember your fun filled night watching a great game and eating incredible food.
