PALATKA, Fla. (KAKE) - A 16-year-old Florida girl has died after being struck by lightning while hunting with her dad earlier this week.

Baylee Holbrook was taken off life support Thursday morning, according to WJXX. She had been in critical condition at a hospital in Gainesville following Tuesday's lightning strike.

Baylee and her father were hunting in a blind in Palatka when lightning struck a tree, causing both to lose consciousness. Baylee's father came to and discovered his daughter was not breathing. He gave her CPR until first responders arrived.

"She was the one on Wednesday nights and Sunday mornings that was texting her peers here at the school, her peers, her loved ones: 'Hey, hope to see you at church,' hope to see you there because she always wanted to see people be better than who they were," close family friend and pastor Willie McKinnon said. "And her main goal was to make sure they had every opportunity to accept Jesus Christ into their heart."

McKinnon said Baylee was a junior in high school who loved cheerleading and photography. He said her passion was hunting and that the trip with her dad on Tuesday was one they took often.

Florida is one of the hottest spots for lightning in the country , WESH reports.
