WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) - Multiple animals at the Wichita Animal Shelter were put down without approval after an incident involving a civilian supervisor.

The Wichita police Department said they are taking this incident very seriously and are conducting an internal investigation into what happened. The Professional Standards Bureau will see if WPD policies have been broken.

The supervisor has been placed on paid administrative leave while they conduct the investigation. If it is found that WPD policies were not followed, appropriate action will be taken.

The WPD apologized for the pain and confusion caused by this to members of the community.

The number of animals put down because of this incident has not been released.
