WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) - The air quality for Wichita on Wednesday is considered unsafe due to smoke from fires in the northwestern U.S., the City of Wichita says.

The current air quality index for Wichita for Wednesday is 166 AQI, which is rated "unhealthy."

According to airnow.gov, people with heart or lung disease, older adults, children and teens should take the following steps to stay healthy during the current air conditions:

  • Avoid strenuous outdoor activities.
  • Keep outdoor activities short.
  • Consider moving physical activities indoors or rescheduling them.

Everyone else should follow these steps to stay healthy:

  • Choose less strenuous activities (like walking instead of running) so you don’t breathe as hard.
  • Shorten the amount of time you are active outdoors.
