Sedgwick County Jail inmate dies, cause unknown

SEDGWICK COUNTY, Kan. (KAKE) - An inmate has died Sunday after being found unresponsive in his cell at the Sedgwick County Jail, the sheriff's office says.
Authorities say a 35-year-old male inmate was found unresponsive in his cell at approximately 5:50 a.m. Sunday and immediate medical attention was administered from onsite staff and responding EMS personnel. The inmate was transported to St. Francis Hospital where he was pronounced dead shortly after 6:45 a.m. The Sedgwick County Sheriff's office says the preliminary cause of death is unknown pending an autopsy.
The inmate's family has been notified of his death and his identity is being withheld at their request, the sheriff's office says. The inmate was being held in the Sedgwick County Detention Facility on felony charges and had been in custody since January 2023.
This marks the third in-custody death of the 14,000 inmates booked at the Sedgwick County Detention Facility in 2023.
