NEWTON, Kan. (KAKE) - A 66-year-old Newton man has been sentenced to 24 1/2 years in prison for child sex crimes.

John Unick pleaded guilty in August 2023 to rape and aggravated criminal sodomy of a child under 14 years old. Along with the prison sentence, District Judge Jason Lane ordered Unick to serve lifetime post release and lifetime registration as a sexual offender.

Unick's lifetime post release requires Kansas Department of Corrections supervision for the rest of his life. He has conditions set by the Kansas Department of Corrections; if he violates those conditions, he could be sent back to prison.
