WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) - Wichita police are investigating after someone stole a City of Wichita vehicle and caused damage at several locations in Riverside on Thursday.

Officers responded just before 5 a.m. to the report of a suspicious vehicle at Sim Park. They arrived to find a disabled and abandoned white Chevy Tahoe on Murdock Avenue.

Lt. Aaron Moses said the investigation indicates someone stole the city vehicle from a water facility in the area, drove through the gate at Botanica and left it where officers later found it. Moses said the car drove through at least two fences and other property.

Dawn Hewitt, executive director of Botanica said, “Earlier this morning there was an unfortunate incident at Botanica,”

Pictures from the scene Thursday morning showed Botanica's front gate ripped off, some damage to rope fencing at Sim Park and several Wichita Police Department vehicles surrounding the stolen white SUV.

Botanica estimates that the incident caused about $5,000 in damage.

The good news? No injuries for people or plants.

Hewitt said, “Thankfully, we did not have damage sustained within the gardens themselves.”

Lt. Moses said investigators were reviewing surveillance video and examining the vehicle for trace evidence.
