Police believe man killed mother, then himself in northwest Wichita home
WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) - Wichita police believe a 57-year-old man shot and killed his 80-year-old mother before fatally shooting himself.
Officers were performing a welfare check in the 4800 block of North Portwest at around 6:20 a.m. Friday. They were informed upon arrival that Margaret O'Neil did not answer the door for a friend, which was out of the ordinary.
Police officers saw through a window that Margaret was lying on the kitchen floor, and they forced entry into the home. WPD spokesperson Kristopher Gupilan said in a release that it appeared Margaret had been shot multiple times.
"Margaret's son, 57-year-old Michael O'Neil of Wichita, was found inside the residence with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound," the release said. "At this time, investigators believe that this incident is a murder-suicide."
Anyone with information on this incident is asked to call WPD detectives at (316) 268-4407, the See Something Say Something hotline at (316) 519-2282 or Crime Stoppers at (316) 267-2111.
