SEDGWICK COUNTY, Kan. (KAKE) - Police say a man who had stolen a truck hit a young couple driving to a family celebration. The couple died in the crash.

The family of Alyna Elder says she and her boyfriend, Nathaniel Ashworth, were looking forward to a happy life together and says they were about to get engaged.

No one could have predicted that their lives would be cut short by a tragic car crash, that began with a police chase in Andover.

"There's a hole in my heart, you know? It'll probably never be repaired," says Alyna's father Scott.

On Sunday, Alyna and Nathaniel were on their way to celebrate the wedding anniversary of Alyna's parents at the community center in Rose Hill.

Alyna's cousin saw the crash on his way there and feared the worst.

"He knew that she drove a green S-10 pickup and that's what he saw," says mother Charlene. "When he saw the crash, he knew that he already knew that they probably were gone because of how devastating the crash was."

Police say a 19-year-old who stole a vehicle in Andover hit Alyna and Nathaniel head-on.

Charlene and Scott, however, are focusing on having faith through this tragic time, and remembering the special bond shared between them.

"Alyna was his first love, but he knew that she was his last," said Charlene. "He loved her so much."

The family is raising money for a funeral for both of them, and plan to bury them side by side. Click here for the GoFundMe page.

Authorities have not released any additional information regarding the crash or the suspect.
