Police: 2 dead after a stolen truck hits vehicle near Derby
DERBY, Kan. (KAKE) - Two people are dead after a 19-year-old man driving a stolen truck struck their vehicle head-on, authorities say.
The accident happened before 3 p.m. Sunday just east of Derby, at the intersection of 63rd St. South and 103rd St. East. The victims were a 19-year-old man and a 20-year-old woman.
A woman had offered a 19-year-old suspect a ride from Towanda to the Dollar General in Andover. Andover Police Chief Buck Buchanan said the man ended up stealing her truck and headed toward Derby. She called the police and reported the truck stolen.
The Kansas Highway Patrol attempted to stop the truck, but the suspect would not stop. He side-swiped a vehicle, then struck the vehicle carrying the two victims.
The relationship between the two victims is unknown at this time. The crash remains under investigation.
