TOWANDA, Kan. (KAKE) - Friday in Kansas, thousands of people were passing through the state, heading to their Memorial Day Weekend destination.

KAKE spoke with people at the Towanda rest stop who were traveling from Austin, Texas, and Edmond Oklahoma to different parts of Kansas. But one traveler left Wisconsin early this morning. And was planning to get to New Mexico Friday night. She says it's about an 18-hour drive.

“We left at 3:00 this morning. My son is right here. We're taking him to Philmont Scout Ranch. He's gonna work there this summer as a ranger,” said Kristina Higbee, who is traveling from Oconomowoc, Wisconsin.”

Higbee's advice for other drivers, take your time.
