The state track and field championships are off to a record breaking start.

Stanton County's Chesney Peterson opened the event by winning the 3,200 meter race.   Her time breaks the 2A state record by nearly 12 seconds.

Peterson already holds the 1,600 record.   The senior will run track and cross country at Tennessee next season.

Multi-sport athlete Lindsey Cure of Goodland won the javelin in Class 3A and broke the 3A record.

It's been a good day for Team Seyfert from Beloit.  Grady Seyfert took the gold medal in 3A shot put,  while Tatum Seyfert took first in discus.

Lily Brown of Pittsburg-Colgan is the meet's first double winner.  She's the 2A champ in high jump and triple jump.

Macksville's Mayce Russell set a new record in class 1A javelin.

Events will be held in boys, girls and wheelchair competitions.
