WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) - A former Wichita City Council member wants to return to the board...this time as mayor.

Jared Cerullo announced on social media that he has filed documents to run in the primary election for mayor. Cerullo submitted a petition signed by Wichita voters.

"Petty partisan politics will end the moment I am elected mayor of Wichita", Cerullo posted.

In 2021, Cerullo was elected to finish the term of 3rd District council member James Clendenin. Cerullo ran to hold on to his seat later that year but was defeated by Mike Hoheisel. Cerullo has worked as a news reporter in Wichita for 20 years, including six years at KAKE-TV.

He becomes the sixth candidate to file for the Mayor's race. Mayor Brandon Whipple, council member Bryan Frye and Lily Wu are expected to file before the June 1 deadline.

The primary election is scheduled for August 1st.
