A newly released court report shows a high-ranking member of the Wichita Police Department shared confidential information with a man who is not affiliated with the department. An affidavit of probable cause was made public today in the criminal case against Wendell Nicholson.

Nicholson faces eight counts of computer crimes.

The affidavit shows investigators found dozens of documents, including shooting reviews, gang updates, police daily briefings, and body camera video Nicholson shared with a man who is not affiliated with Wichita Police. The man told investigators he didn't know why he was receiving the documents. Many of the documents are labeled as "law enforcement sensitive" or "for official use only."

Investigators found that Nicholson was disciplined in December 2022 for a previous incident where he disseminated criminal history records to a person not authorized to receive the information. Nicholson retired in March after 29 years with WPD.
