Man gets just over 5 years in prison for deadly Wichita shooting

WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) - A man has been sentenced to just over five years (63 months) in prison in connection to a southwest Wichita fatal shooting that happened in 2018.
35-year-old DeWayne Cope pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter after being convicted on Feb 1 of 2023.
Cope was arrested in 2018 by police after a neighbor found Trenton Custer dead inside a mobile home in the 3800 block of south Meridian.
Investigators at the time believed there was a fight inside the home that led to Custer being shot several times.
Cope was in jail for forgery and drug possession at the time of his arrest. He also has numerous prior drug-related convictions.
