3-year-old dies, mother hospitalized after car crashes into Derby QuikTrip gas pump
DERBY, Kan. (KAKE) - A 3-year-old girl has been killed and her mother is hospitalized after a car crashed into a gas pump at a Derby QuikTrip.
Police say the incident happened at 1430 N Nelson Drive at 5:18 p.m. Monday. Police said a car was driving on Meadowlark Road when they lost control and ran into a woman who was pumping gas, causing a huge explosion. The woman who was pumping gas was hospitalized.
"I heard it was a child and it's always a very sad thing when a child is involved in something like this," said Derby resident Anthony Mockry. "It just breaks your heart."
A third person suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Police say a medical condition may have impacted the person who crashed the car.
"We'll be seeing if it's if there may be a medical issue involved if there are other extenuating circumstances," said Derby Police Chief Robert Lee. "And we'll be approaching this very methodically and investigating as we go."
An investigation is ongoing.
A GoFundMe has been set up to help the child's family. It has raised over $14,000 as of 9 a.m. Tuesday. The verified fundraiser identified the girl as Harper Ivy and says her mother, Stephanie, is in stable condition but will be put into an induced coma for at least three weeks.
