EL DORADO, Kan. (KAKE) - An Augusta man has been sentenced to life in prison for the abuse and murder of his 3-month-old son two years ago.

An El Dorado District Court official said that Kaleb Hogan would not be eligible for parole for 25 years. He was sentenced Monday to life for first-degree murder and 32 months for child abuse. His motion for a new trial was denied.

Augusta officers responded on March 23, 2021 to the report of an infant not breathing at Hogan's apartment. The baby boy, Malykai Hogan, died at a Wichita hospital three days later due to a severe brain bleed.

An autopsy showed six fractured ribs in different stages of healing and a second brain bleed that was also in stages of healing. Malykai's death was determined to be caused by blunt force trauma to the cranial/cerebral/spinal area.

A child abuse specialist confirmed during trial that the injuries Malykai sustained are consistent with child abuse and could not have been from anything besides blunt force trauma.

Hogan is a former El Dorado Correctional Facility officer. The Department of Corrections said he was not employed with the prison at the time of the crime.
