Firefighters smash windows, run hose through car blocking hydrant

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (KAKE) — Firefighters responding to a fire in Massachusetts last week smashed the windows of a car and ran their hose through the vehicle because it was blocking the hydrant.
The New Bedford Fire Department said the incident happened late Saturday afternoon. Crews were called to the report of a kitchen fire at a three-story apartment building.
They arrived to find that the closest hydrant as blocked by a maroon Nissan. Firefighter's broke the front driver's side and passenger side windows to run the house to the hydrant, according to a local news report.
"The crew of Engine 9 overcame an 'obstruction' in front of the closest hydrant and were able to secure a water supply," the fire department said on Facebook.
Seven people, including three children, were displaced and assisted by the American Red Cross. One person was arrested, but additional details were not released.
