BARTON COUNTY, Kan. (KAKE) - U.S. Marshals have arrested a 38-year-old man accused of shooting at a Kansas police officer during a chase earlier this month. 

The Hoisington Police Department said William Frederick Jr. was taken into custody in California on Wednesday. 

According to the Barton County Sheriff's Office, Frederick was the passenger in a car being pursued by officers on April 1. During the chase on K-4, a Hoisington officer said he heard either a gunshot or a backfiring car right before his vehicle began to overheat and he had to discontinue the chase. It was later discovered that the officer's car had been struck by gunfire.

The chase ended in Claflin when the driver hit a utility box.

The United States Marshals Service is searching for a suspect believed to have shot three times at a law enforcement officer during a police chase.

The Barton County Sheriff's Office said that at 2:20 a.m. on Saturday, April 1, a police officer was investigating a suspicious vehicle in Hoisington, Kansas. When the officer tried to pull the vehicle over it began a high-speed chase east on K-4. During the chase, the Hoisington officer said he heard either a gunshot or a backfiring car right before his vehicle began to overheat and he had to discontinue the chase. It was later discovered that the Hoisington officer's car had been shot.

When the Hoisington officer had to discontinue the chase, a Sheriff's Office Sergeant had joined the chase and continued following the suspect's vehicle east on K-4. The chase entered Claflin where the suspect drove into a utility box and deputies were able to arrest two of the three suspects.

The driver was identified as 21-year-old Rylan Witmer from Wilson. He was taken to the Barton County jail and booked on charges of possession of methamphetamine, felony attempt to flee and elude, and obstruction of a law enforcement officer. He was released on Monday after posting a $10,000 bond. 

The passenger who eluded law enforcement when the suspects crashed into a utility box, was identified as 38-year-old William Frederick Jr. from the Salina area. The United States Marshals are searching for Frederick, who may have stolen a 2015 Toyota RAV4 with Kansas tag 602 CVU. He is suspected of attempted murder of a Hoisington law enforcement officer and aggravated assault of law enforcement officers, in regards to the Sheriff's deputies.

Frederick is a white male, around five feet and six inches tall with a medium build, weighing roughly 165 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes.

The third passenger was taken into custody but released later.
