WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) - With almost 2 million views on TikTok, you might have already seen this adorable video of a little girl calling for her dad, the starting point guard for the Wichita Skykings, during a recent game.

But the real story starts years ago.

"It's really tough. It's very tough man," said Skykings point guard Derrick Colter.

After beating cancer in college, Derrick decided to chase his dream of becoming a professional basketball player.

But, like so many in pro sports, this meant spending years overseas and away from his wife and daughter.

"My first year, I played in France. Second year Ukraine, third year Switzerland, fourth year Switzerland, fifth year Ukraine again, and my sixth year Portugal," said Derrick.

But this year, Derrick landed a gig as the starting point guard for our new pro team, the Wichita Skykings.

That's when it sunk in for 20-month-old Waverly that she finally gets to watch dad play right here at home.

"They came back down the end of the court, so he was right there. And she was just like, daddy! So I started recording so I could show him after the game," said Derrick's wife Alisha.

Alisha says she never expected the video to go viral, and as good as it feels to have millions celebrating with them, she's pretty sure about half the views are from dad.

"It's hard to describe because, like I said, she's such a daddy's girl. So being able to like, have her there and watch him do what he loves. And she loves watching him. It means everything," said Alisha.

"When you come in the house, and the kid runs up to you and says daddy, and gives you a hug after you're working all day, it's like one of the best feelings," said Derrick.
