Sheriff: Kansas man dies after pickup goes airborne, overturns
ELLINWOOD, Kan. (KAKE) - A central Kansas sheriff says an 84-year-old man was killed Thursday afternoon when his pickup truck crashed.
The accident happened at around 2:45 p.m. on Barton County Road about a mile west of Ellinwood. Barton County Sheriff Brian Bellendir said deputies arrived to find a Ford Ranger overturned in a field on the north side of the roadway.
The driver, Ronald Kelly of Ellinwood, was trapped in the vehicle. He was extricated and taken to a Wichita hospital where he later died.
Bellendir said the investigation indicates the eastbound pickup left the roadway for unknown reasons and struck a farm driveway. The vehicle then became airborne, vaulted over the driveway and landed in the field where it overturned.
The sheriff's office is investigating whether Kelly had a medical incident prior to the crash. He was not wearing a seat belt.
