ARKANSAS CITY, Kan. (KAKE) - There will be a fundraising event later this spring to help cover the medical bills for a young Kansas woman who was hit by a pickup truck last month.

Additionally, a family friend set up a GoFundMe for Gracie James. The 19-year-old was found lying in a ditch in north Arkansas City the evening of Sunday, February 5.

The Cowley County Sheriff's Office said they received a report of an injured pedestrian at around 8:15 p.m. The GoFundMe says a neighbor found Gracie thanks to the light of her cellphone.

Gracie suffered critical injuries and was taken to a local hospital before being flown to Ascension Via Christ St. Francis in Wichita, according to the Cowley Courier Traveler

The driver had left the scene, but the sheriff's office located the driver of a white Ford F-250 with damage to its passenger side. The suspect, whose name was not released, was booked for duty of driver involving great bodily harm, driving while suspended and an expired tag. The GoFundMe says he also had no insurance.

"The medical bills have become overwhelming for the family, and we want to do what we can to show support!" the fundraising page says.

Along with the GoFundMe, there will be a dinner and silent auction on Saturday, May 6. It will be from 4 to 7 p.m. at the VFW located at 3212 North Summit in Arkansas City.

"A pulled pork sandwich, baked beans & potato salad will be served for just $10 per person! There will be a silent auction and music!"
