GARDEN CITY, Kan. (KAKE) – Starting next week, the Garden City Police Department and other law enforcement agencies in Kansas will have more officers near high schools to raise awareness of roadway safety.

It's part of the "Seatbelts Are For Everyone" or SAFE program. The program begins on Feb. 20 and will run through March 3.

Police say car crashes are the leading cause of teen death in the U.S.

The department says citations will be issued for:

  • Speeding.
  • Texting.
  • Not wearing a seat belt.
