ANDOVER, Kan. (KAKE) - An Andover Central senior will host a prom dress giveaway for Wichita-area high schoolers this weekend.

McKinnley Evans is gifting the dresses to girls for free. Her collection nears 200.

“I'm the one who organized this, but so many different families and girls and students have donated these dresses to help other people,” Evans said.

Evans started the program in 2022 after shopping for her own prom dress. She said a high school prom can cost girls hundreds of dollars, including a dress, dinner, flowers, and more.

“The dresses were just so much more expensive than I thought they would be,” Evans said.

“Not everybody's parents can do that for them.”

This week’s giveaways are from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 17, and Saturday, Feb. 18 at the Andover Center for Advanced Professional Studies, or CAPS building. Evans will also host another on March 4.

“We have old dresses that are maybe from like the 2000s all the way to brand new dresses with the tags still on them,” she said.

Shoes, jewelry, and a few men’s tuxedos are also available. Girls who find a dress will be able to call Quickstitch in east Wichita for 10% off alterations.

“Whenever anybody has a dress on, someone else will walk by and be like, ‘Oh, you look great in that,’” Evans said.” And it's just…that's my favorite part of it.”

You can donate your prom dress as well. Evans said to either email her - [email protected] - or call the CAPS office at 316-218-4640.

“A lot of people like to hold onto their dresses because it's a special night, and the fact that they were willing to donate that just makes me see the good in a lot of people,” she said.
