WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) - A house fire in west Wichita kept firefighters and EMS busy Sunday afternoon.

According to Wichita Fire Department Battalion Chief Chad Dunham, emergency crews were dispatched to the fire at approximately 4:10 pm. When they arrived, they found heavy smoke and flames coming from the garage and the house. There was significant damage to the garage, attic and kitchen.

“The occupant said he had heard the fire started in the garage sounds like he was hearing something in the garage and didn’t really know what it was ...he kept thinking somebody was at his front door and went back and forth a couple of times and opened his garage and realized his garage was on fire," Dunham said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. Dunham says the occupant wasn’t cooking in the garage but they’re investigating a pellet smoker ran a day or two ago and because it was still hot it could have smoldered.

One of the home's occupants sustained minor burns.
