MAKATO, Kan. (KAKE) - An child has died after being thrown from an SUV when it left the road in Mankato and crashed into a tree. 

The Kansas Highway Patrol said the crash took place shortly before midnight on Saturday when 18-year-old Elliott Whiteside, of North Carolina, was driving south on N McRoberts St. Whiteside left the road and crashed into the a tree. A juvenile in the SUV was thrown from the vehicle and was pronounced dead on the scene.

Authorities say the child had no safety restraint. 

The KHP has not released the age of the child who died.
