FREDONIA, Kan. (KAKE) - A 54-year-old southeast Kansas man was killed Tuesday evening when his car crashed head-on into a pickup truck.

The accident happened at around 6:15 p.m. on U.S. 400 just east of K-39, which is northwest of Fredonia. The Kansas Highway Patrol reports an eastbound Chevy Malibu crossed into westbound traffic. An oncoming Dodge Ram attempted to avoid the collision by entering the eastbound lane, but the Malibu crossed back into the eastbound lane and hit the pickup.

The driver of the Malibu, James White of Parsons, died at the scene. The 23-year-old Larned man driving the pickup was being treated for serious injuries at a Wichita hospital.

It's unclear what caused White to veer into oncoming traffic.
