Wichita man sentenced to over 5 years in prison for fatal shooting

WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) - A Wichita man has been sentenced to just over five years in prison for the shooting death of a 15-year-old boy at a Wichita park.
21-year-old Malick Garrett was sentenced to 61 months in prison after pleading guilty to one count of voluntary manslaughter.
In 2019, officers responded to a shooting at McAdams Park in the 1400 block of North Ohio. They arrived to find 15-year-old Marion Wheaton suffering from a gunshot wound to his upper body. He later died.
Investigators later revealed that Wheaton and his 15-and 16-year-old male friends walked to the area to meet with another group of teens to allegedly fight over an ongoing dispute. As Wheaton and his friends entered the area, a vehicle approached.
Garrett and a 15-year-old male got out of the vehicle and Garrett fired multiple shots from a handgun, striking Wheaton. Multiple guns were recovered during the investigation.
