Man who killed his estranged wife in Wichita dies in prison
HUTCHINSON, Kan. (KAKE) - A 30-year-old man who killed his estranged wife in north Wichita in 2018 has died in prison less than five months after he was sentenced.
The Kansas Department of Corrections said Juan Caballeros-Yescas was found unresponsive in his cell at the Hutchinson Correctional Facility Wednesday morning.
"Staff began life-saving measures immediately and continued after emergency medical services arrived," the KDOC said in a release. "Mr. Caballeros-Yescas was pronounced deceased by medical staff."
The cause of death is pending the results of an independent autopsy. The release said a preliminary assessment indicates it wasn't due to COVID-19.
The KDOC said Caballeros-Yescas was serving a 22.5-year sentence for first-degree murder, aggravated burglary, and three counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He was sentenced on August 24, 2022 and had been at the Hutchinson prison since late November.
Police said Caballeros-Yescas shot and killed 41-year-old Lucy Mojica on July 7, 2018. Officers responded early that afternoon to a shooting in the 500 block of West 17th Street North, where they found Lucy suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. She died at a local hospital.
Caballeros-Yescas was arrested nearly two years later in El Paso, Texas.
