Wichita Kan. (KAKE) - A mega-retailer with one of the most die-hard customer bases is coming to Wichita this summer.

This is the Scheels in Overland Park, and minus the Ferris wheel, the company says the Wichita store will be very similar. On July 1, all of this will be a reality.

While construction crews are making fast progress, Event Coordinator Tasha Mckeever says there's still a lot to do.

"Scheels has about 100 people hired right now, but we are looking for a target of around 500. So we have lots of positions still waiting to be filled," said Mckeever.

While there are workers out there, in an already tight labor market, WSU Economic Director Jeremy Hill says they'll have some competition.

"In the Wichita market, we have around 32,000 people that are employed in retail. So 500 people is like 1.6 percent. So this is not, this will increase the overall retail, obviously, but it will also be somewhat competitive," said Hill. "They will struggle. They're gonna fill it, but they'll struggle, just like every other retailer, other every other firm is struggling to find people in today's market environment."

However, Mckeever says they're not worried. As an employee-owned company, she says it's a place many people make a career.

The only thing the company would tell us about starting pay is that it "depends on position and experience," and says it's "competitive."

But Mckeever says what's even more important to her is that it's a work environment she hasn't seen anywhere else.

"One thing that made me fall in love with a company is we have a huge heart for the community. And I mean, the store is amazing, but the one thing that stuck out to me is how much we give of our time and our resources to make our communities better," said Mckeever.

The company is hostings it's first career expo Friday, January 13th, from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm and Saturday, January 14th from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm at 220 W Douglas Ave, Suite 200. Click here to learn more.

partners and our employee owners - are our number one priority. We prove that fact to our associates by offering flexible schedules, competitive pay, and the best discount in retail.”

It's the second Scheels store for the Sunflower State, with the first opening in Overland Park in 2015. Scheels said the 220,000 square-foot Towne East Square, in collaboration with Simon, will move into the old Sears space.

Scheels said the store will feature a variety of family-friendly attractions, including "a wildlife mountain, rollerball, and Fuzziwig’s Candy Shop."

"Shoppers will have the opportunity to enjoy interactive arcade games and sports simulators, and specialty treats at Ginna’s Cafe, a restaurant serving gourmet soups and sandwiches, homemade fudge and specialty coffee," the company said in a prior release.
