Arkansas City high school teacher charged with sexual battery
ARKANSAS CITY, Kan. (KAKE) - An Arkansas City High School teacher has been charged with sexual battery after a student made allegations of improper conduct.
Ark City police said on December 15, an 18-year-old female student reported to the administration that a teacher had touched her inappropriately without her consent. After police investigated and conducted interviews, the Cowley County DA's office charged 38-year-old Jacob Sumpter was charged with one count of sexual battery.
USD 470 said Thursday in a release that the agriculture education teacher remains on paid administrative leave and that a long-term substitute teacher as been assigned in his place. Students will continue their classes as planned.
"While we have been shocked and devastated by this situation, we remain dedicated to providing a safe learning environment for our students," a USD 470 spokesperson said. "Their safety and well-being are our top priority."
Sumpter is scheduled to appear in court on January 30.
