WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) - Doctors say the brutally cold temperatures that are coming are nothing to mess around with.

“Kind of bracing down and getting ready for it as best as possible,” said Roger Beste, a Wichita resident.

"I’ve already done grocery shopping so I don't have to be out in the cold. And I’ve already done my Christmas shopping as well,” said Mallela Sabas, a Wichita resident.

Wichita residents are getting ready for a plunge into the deep freeze by getting as much as possible done before the cold arrives. But, one guy says he's looking forward to the brutal temps that will be unlike anything he's ever seen.

“I might venture out just to test it. Might as well play around a little bit,” said Beste.

But for people like Roger, there's a limit on just how long that play can be. Doctor David Nguyen an ER Doctor at Ascension Via Christi St. Francis explains.

“You want to take frequent breaks. Probably 15-20 minutes maximum,” said Dr. David Nguyen, an ER Physician from Ascension Via Christi St. Francis.

So, what are some signs that you've been in the cold for too long?

"There'll be uncontrolled shivering, confusion, sluggishness, with cold it slows everything down in your body. So those are signs that you need to go inside and warm up,” said Nguyen.

Also, Doctor Nguyen says you want to avoid two things.

"Cold and wet is a bad combination. So making sure that the clothes are waterproof, that the shocks aren't wet. That inside the garage isn't wet,” said Nguyen.

Doctor Nguyen says they expect the ER to be busy over the next couple of days. As they are already dealing with RSV, COVID, and Flu cases.
