Company delivers Thanksgiving meals to Wichita school students and families
Typically, when you see these yellow First Student school buses out on the road, they’re carrying Wichita public school children to and from school, but on Wednesday, the buses had a little different cargo.
First student drivers and staff went around Wichita Wednesday delivering Thanksgiving meal kits to families in the district.
“Our drivers, our monitors, our staff that work for us, this is something that they take pride in. They look forward to doing this every year" explained Kary Dixon, senior location manager for First Student.
Families are selected based on a couple of different criteria according to Dixon. "It's a combination of our employees, drivers, and monitors that are out on the streets every day delivering these students, recognizing some families that need some assistance, as well as partnering with the district and their social workers that are aware of families that need assistance.”
It's the 7th year the first student has given out food, growing from 10 families initially in 2015 to this year’s 28.
Dixon says they were able to serve 8 more families because of donations from the USD 259's food services department. He hopes to get over 30 families with next year’s distribution.
