BELLE PLAINE, Kan. (KAKE) - A Derby man was hospitalized Sunday night after his vehicle became airborne and crashed into the Pizza Hut in Belle Plaine.

Belle Plaine Police Chief Bill Berry told Sumner NewsCow the man was driving erratically, possibly between 60 and 65 mph, at around 8:20 p.m. when his 2013 Jeep Patriot hit a curb and went into a ditch before crashing into the side of the Pizza Hut at 400 East 4th Avenue.

Chief Berry said the momentum from the bounce from the ditch caused the Jeep to land in an upward position. The Jeep and building then caught fire.

NewsCow reports an officer climbed into the Jeep and pulled the driver out. The officer then used a fire extinguisher to douse the flames before the local fire department arrived and took over.

The driver was unconscious when he was pulled from the vehicle. EMS transported him to a Wichita hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The Pizza Hut was closed and there was no word on when it will reopen.

KAKE News is not identifying the driver, because he has not been arrested or charged.
