WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) - WPD is investigating a traffic collision that killed 66-year-old Elaine Edens and her dog.

Around 11:50 a.m. on Wednesday, officers responded to an injury accident at the intersection of Oliver and 2nd Street. When they got there, they located a woman, now identified as Edens, who had been hit by a 2001 Chevrolet Suburban driven by an 82-year-old woman.

Edens succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. It was later learned that the driver was driving northbound on Oliver and struck Edens while she was crossing the roadway in a marked crosswalk. Edens' dog also died. 

An investigation is ongoing.

A woman and her dog were hit and killed by a vehicle in east Wichita just before noon on Wednesday. 

The accident happened at 2nd Street North and Oliver. Police at the scene said a woman was walking her dog westbound across Oliver when they were hit by a northbound vehicle. 

The pedestrian, who was in her late 60s to early 70s, died at the scene. Her name was not released. Her dog also died.

The driver who hit her remained at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation. It's unclear if the crosswalk signal was active at the time of the accident.
