WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) - An 18-year-old suspect has been charged in the shooting death of a 16-year-old girl last year.

Kayden Wilson made his first court appearance Friday and was charged with first-degree murder, criminal discharge of a firearm, five counts of aggravated assault and criminal use of weapons. The next hearing in the case is scheduled for October 31.

Wilson is accused of killing Azuri Jones on September 23, 2021. Officers responded that afternoon to multiple reports of shots fired and vehicles chasing each other around 15th Street North and Belmont, near Wichita State. As officers were responding to the area, a vehicle with a group of teens arrived at Wesley Medical Center. Jones was in the car and died a short time later.

Jones' aunt, Felisha Brown, told KAKE News last year that her niece was in a car with family when they stopped to pick up a friend. The friend's boyfriend threatened her with a gun, so she got in their car, and they sped off. The suspects chased them, and just a few blocks later, started shooting at the vehicle.

"When they hit her, her sister rushed her to the hospital. And she told me, she said what she remembers was seeing her sister bleeding from the chest, and she says she remembers her sister saying it hurts," said Brown.

Two weeks prior to her death, Jones was seven months pregnant and in labor. Her newborn died just two hours after delivery. That same day, the family found out Jones' older brother, Christian Willis, was killed in Lawrence.

Two other teens were arrested following Jones' death. Court proceedings against them have not been announced.
