MEDICINE LODGE, Kan. (KAKE) - Authorities say two drivers were killed Wednesday morning in a head-on crash during a police chase in south-central Kansas.

The crash happened at around 10:30 a.m. on U.S. 281 at mile marker 34 in Barber County. That's north of Medicine Lodge. Trooper Chad Crittenden with the Kansas Highway Patrol said a Ford F-350 had been reported stolen out of Pratt and law enforcement pursued the truck through Pratt County and south on U.S. 281 into Barber County.

The fleeing pickup crashed head-on into a northbound Ford pickup in a ditch. The northbound pickup attempted to avoid the fleeing truck by driving toward the ditch.  The patrol's online crash log states evidence at the scene indicates the fleeing driver intentionally drove at the other vehicle.

The man driving the stolen pickup, 39-year-old Johnathan Ahlvers of Halstead, and the driver of the northbound truck, 70-year-old Terrill Underwood of Medicine Lodge, were killed.

Crittenden said a trooper was prepared to deploy stop sticks farther south on 281, but the stolen pickup crashed before KHP could stop it.

The highway was closed well into Wednesday afternoon.
