WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) - The updated COVID-19 booster shot combating the Omicron subvariants could come to Sedgwick County this week.

It will combat the BA.4 and BA.5 Omicron subvariants. The Sedgwick County health director, says the county will get a shipment of doses by mid-week.

“I don't want to wear a mask. So, I'll get a shot. If I can take one shot and not wear a mask every day it seems like a good deal to me,” said Sara Hurd.

Many people share that reaction when it comes to getting an updated COVID-19 booster shot. As for those eligible for the dose, you have to have the original two doses or the single Johnson & Johnson shot. But not everyone who got fully vaccinated is on board with getting a booster.

"At the moment I'm kind of on the up and down with that. Because I did get the COVID-19 vaccine when I was back in Georgia. And unfortunately, after the fact I caught COVID. And it was a really bad time catching it,” said Derricka Gray.

Others who already got either one or two booster shots are considering it.

"I haven't really decided yet, but I am leaning towards it, yes,” said Ashley Collins.

People 12 and older are eligible to get the updated COVID-19 booster shot. So how fast can you get yours once Sedgwick County gets a shipment?

"We'll have it available within 24 hours,” said Sedgwick County Health Director Adrienne Byrne.

And how will the Sedgwick County health department give out shots?

"We're not going to have any type of a mass clinic like we did when it first came out. We do still offer the vaccine at our 2716 west central location,” said Byrne.

Sedgwick County Health Director Adrienne Byrne tells KAKE news, when the second booster came out, just under 5 percent of Sedgwick County residents got it.

"We're not totally sure of how much vaccine is going to come. We're ordered thousands of doses. So, we feel pretty confident we're going to meet that need,” said Byrne.

You can also get the updated booster shot at your local pharmacy. Byrne also tells KAKE news you can get the updated COVID-19 booster shot and the flu shot at the same time.
