WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) - An inmate was found dead in the Sedgwick County Detention Facility and investigators are working to find out what happened.

On August 24, 2022, around 12:55 p.m., a 38-year-old man inmate was found by jail staff to be unresponsive in a housing unit of the Sedgwick County Detention Facility.  Detention staff immediately started to preform CPR at the point.

Emergency Medical Services were then called and they declared the inmate deceased.

The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office Investigation’s Unit and the Kansas Bureau of Investigations were notified of the in-custody death.

A preliminary investigation indicates the death appears to be from natural causes. An autopsy is pending at the Forensic Science Center.

The sheriff's office on Friday identified the inmate as Joseph Brueggeman.

He was a pretrial detainee on a municipal misdemeanor charge of violating a protection order.  He had been in custody since August 11, 2022.

This is the fourth in-custody death in 2022.
