Sedgwick man pleads guilty to murder, sex crimes in wife's death
WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) - A 44-year-old Sedgwick man has pleaded guilty to murder and sex crimes in connection to his wife's death in 2020.
The Sedgwick County district attorney's office said Craig Johnston pleaded guilty to reckless second-degree murder, attempted rape, attempted aggravated criminal sodomy and aggravated sexual battery. His trial had been set to begin Tuesday.
Officers responded the night of October 23, 2020 to the report of an injured woman at a home in the 7900 block of West 109th in Sedgwick. The sheriff's office said 40-year-old Amber Dawn Slankard had suffered severe injuries and died at a Wichita hospital. Johnston was taken into custody at the scene.
Johnston is scheduled to be sentenced on August 12.
According to the Kansas offender registry, Johnston was convicted in Illinois of sexually abusing a child between the ages of 13 and 16 in November of 1996.
