LAWRENCE, Kan. (KAKE/CNN) - A Vietnam War veteran in Kansas walked dozens of miles on Memorial Day in honor soldiers who died in the war.

William Elston planned to walk over 58,000 steps from Lawrence to Ottawa on Monday, telling KCTV he believed it would take him about 10 hours.

Elston said each step would represent each of the 58,220 U.S. service members who died in Vietnam. By the war's end, more than 2,600 service members were listed as missing in action.

The U.S. government reports that as of April more than 1,500 Americans are still unaccounted for.
