WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) - McConnell Air Force Base is evacuating aircraft on Friday as a precaution due to the possibility of severe weather impacting the Wichita area.

Base officials said in a release that aircraft from the 22d Air Refueling Wing on McConnell AFB would be evacuating away from the area, allowing the aircraft to avoid potential damage, "while also allowing both aircraft and aircrews to maintain their capability to support their mission of Rapid Global Mobility."

McConnell said it's authorities were monitoring the situation and would provide updates as they become available.

Storms in parts of central and eastern Kansas could pack a significant punch with large hail, high wind and even a few tornadoes possible. Check the forecast and track storms at kake.com/weather.
