WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) – A 44-year-old Wichita woman was out walking her dog when both were struck and killed by a vehicle Monday night. 

The accident happened at around 9:30 p.m. on 31st Street South between Greenwich and 127th Street East, which is south of Southeast High School. Lt. Benjamin Blick with the Sedgwick County Sheriff's Office said Melissa Mertes was walking her dog westbound on the north end of the roadway when she was struck by a westbound Chevy Impala.

Mertes and the dog died at the scene.

Authorities made contact with the 18-year-old female driving the Impala, who was not hurt, and witnesses who stopped at the scene. The circumstances of the collision are under investigation.
