Local businesses feeling the heat from March Madness, KU hoping to bring home title win
WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) - Chicken N Pickle was just one local spot really feeling the heat from this year's March Madness. People called all day looking to make reservations and rent spaces, but the indoor and outdoor entertainment complex wasn't the only place gearing up for NCAA Championship game action.
"The first week when we had the two days in a row with 16 games on, we were busy that whole day," Hilary Brickley, the Bar Manager at Chicken N Pickle, said Monday.
Not only are fans invested in their game day experience, but so are those who are hosting the crowds.
Chicken N Pickle has increased its staff count for the National Championship game Monday night. The indoor and outdoor entertainment complex says they expect to be just as busy, if not busier, Monday night than they were Saturday during the Final Four games.
"Obviously, as a Kansas team gets further and further along, there is going to be more and more people gradually that come out to enjoy the game," Brickley said.
Nearly all of the restaurant's 60 TVs will be airing the game.
Another place seeing the March Madness buzz is Bob & Luigi's, a popular pizza spot in Andover.
"The Past few weeks, we have been extremely busy. We had our highest sales night two weeks ago on Friday night and then this last Saturday night, we came right below that with the Final Four games," Aimee Moll, the Manager at Bob & Luigi's.
Bob & Luigi's expects many people to include a pizza in Monday night's game-day meal.
"It's been a good boost for our business. I think the warm weather has helped as well. I think the fact that people are just itching to get out and spend time with friends and family again after a couple of years of it kinda being hard," she added.
The past few weeks haven't just been busy, but Manager Aimee Moll says, it's been a lot of fun.
"It's a lot of fun. The owners are enjoying seeing people in the community come in and getting to know people. We have had people who have never been here coming in," Moll said.
If you plan on celebrating at home or at an establishment, many fans want to look the part too.
"It's definitely a fun time to be a KU fan. Whether you are looking for a throwback shirt from the last victory or any shirts inspired by just the location being in New Orleans. We have some great fan gear available at Dillons," Sheila Regehr, a Spokesperson for Dillons said. "We are all crossing our fingers for a win tonight with KU and if so, we will have great t-shirts available at our Dillons locations starting mid-day to mid-afternoon tomorrow. So on Tuesday for all of our customers to come celebrate with us."
