WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) - Residents of a derby apartment building are shocked after what police suspect was some kind of domestic violence issue that left two people dead.

"I've been living here since it opened up a couple of years ago. And never been anything like this,” said Gary Kinard, who lives at the Trails of Derby Apartments.

Kinard said he was stunned when he heard what had happened at the unit near his.

"I just think you know, just being locked down so long that people are just irritated with each other. And any little thing can set it off,” said Kinard.

Derby Police Chief, Robert Lee said officers responded to the call just after 4 o'clock Friday afternoon to reports of a shooting.

When they arrived, they found a woman who had been shot. She was rushed to the hospital for treatment, but died from her injuries.

A short time later officers found the man they believed was involved on a nearby golf course. He took off running.

"He ran on foot. And it appears that he suffered a self inflicted gunshot wound, which was also fatal on the golf course,” said Lee.

Lee said it's still early in the investigation, but it appears that it's likely a domestic violence type situation.

"We're trying to determine the dynamics of that relationship, what witnesses may have heard those kinds of things, and then will have a lot better answers as time progresses,” said Lee.

He said, right now investigators are doing everything they can to process both scenes and get enough evidence collected to find out what happened…

As for Kinard, he said his heart goes out to the family and friends of the two people who died.

"The family that just lost two young people for nothing. You know, it's not worth it. You know, walk away. You know, something's bothering you. Let it go. Walk away. Cool off. Come back. Talk about later,” said Kinard.

The Derby Police Department asks that anyone that has information to call the department at (316)788-1557.
