Derby police identify 2 killed in murder-suicide
DERBY, Kan. (KAKE) – Derby police have identified two people killed in a murder-suicide on Friday.
Officers responded at around 4 p.m. to a shooting at The Trails apartments in the 1300 block of East Meadowlark Road. They arrived to find 19-year-old Haley Powell who had been shot. She was rushed to a local hospital where she died.
Derby Police Chief Robert Lee said the suspect, 21-year-old Tiryn Young, fled and was spotted at the Derby Golf & Country Club about a mile north of the apartments. He shot himself before officers could arrest him.
Lee said the incident is being worked as a case of domestic violence. Social media posts indicate Powell and Young had been in a relationship.
A GoFundMe has been established to help cover the cost of Powell's funeral and support her 15-month-old son.
