WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) - The Sedgwick County Sheriff's Office says a man jailed for murder attacked the nephew of the man he's charged with killing.

Jermall Campbell, 39, has been in jail since June 30 for first-degree murder, aggravated battery, criminal possession of a firearm, gambling and a federal hold.

The incident happened Wednesday afternoon. The sheriff's office said Campbell went to the man's housing area and when he opened the door, Campbell attacked him with a makeshift weapon. Deputies responded and stopped the attack.

The inmate received roughly seven lacerations, two of which required sutures. He was treated onsite.

Lt. Benjamin Blick said that during the course of the investigation, it was discovered that the inmate who was attacked was the nephew of the victim in Campbell's murder case.

Campbell is charged in the shooting death of 47-year-old Deandre Freeman and wounding of another man on June 20.
