WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE)- A Wichita author said she's hoping to make a difference with a program designed to promote youth literacy.

KAKE News spoke with Read Bro founder Dana McCall Saturday. McCall said she was originally inspired by her family to give back to her community and thought the program would serve as a positive way to do that.

"Even from the time I was younger I would find myself helping other children," said McCall.

McCall said the program is designed to teach children to read, understand what they're reading and the lessons presented in the material. McCall is a self-published author for some of the work that her group goes over.

She told KAKE News she has published three children's books so far. She said each work focuses on a different problem readers can overcome while also showcasing positive representation of Black families for Black children.

"Representation matters," said McCall. "But the message that I convey in my stories, it crosses that barrier of nationality."

McCall said Read Bro sessions are held two days a week for free, giving kids a safe haven and parents the opportunity to provide additional help to their children who might need it.

"A lot of them lacked the confidence they needed to do so," said McCall when describing what some of her readers were like before participating in the program.

She said often times, the extra help and support can be all that it takes to really make a difference in the lives of kids.

"We can all do this. It's not just about Dana," said McCall. "It's not just about the books that I'm you know putting out. It's about the community coming together to make something happen."

McCall said she's currently operating out of a Northeast Wichita building and would appreciate any other offers from business owners who are willing to offer their space.

In addition, she said her program is always looking for additional support from the community and more friendly faces.
