WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE)- A 27-year-old man was charged in connection to a stabbing that happened in downtown Wichita in November.

Jeffery Elam made his first court appearance on Thursday and was charged with attempted second-degree murder.

Elam stabbed a 22-year-old woman in downtown Wichita on November 22 around midnight, in the 100 block of North St. Francis.

Officers say that the woman was walking to her vehicle when Elam approached and stabbed her before running down an alley. The woman suffered a non-life-threatening stab wound to her stomach.

He was arrested near Central and Broadway at around 6:30 p.m. on November 22.

Elam bond is set at $500,000 and his next court appearance is scheduled for December 9.

Kansas Department of Corrections records show Elam is on parole for convictions on two counts of aggravated indecent liberties with a child. The KDOC website indicates Elam was paroled to a detainer in Butler County on November 19 and his current status is "post incarceration." He was serving time for a parole violation, his second since 2018.

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation's offender registry states the crimes happened in Wichita in 2012, which involved a 5-year-old victim, and in 2013, which involved a 6-year-old victim. He was convicted of both crimes on March 3, 2014.

Elam has been a registered sex offender since December of 2015. The registry entry for Elam hasn't been updated since December 19, 2019 and still shows his currently location as the El Dorado Correctional Facility.
